Help DeskIn order to help make your decisions about web design, hosting, or our other services, we have anticipated some important questions that might come to mind.
If you cannot find what you need here, we will be happy to help you, just send an e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org.
HostingWhat is Hosting?
A hosting service allows you to put files on the Internet. The files are stored on a server computer, and only you can modify the files there.
Hosting is usually accompanied by a domain name, which is the address used to reach your website.
How do I choose the right domain name?
First thing's first, your domain name cannot already exist. Use a WhoIs search to see if your intended name is already registered.
Keep it short, people do not like to type monstrous addresses. If you are already hosted, but your website address is something like www.somehost.net/~yoursite, you should consider buying a shorter domain which will point to that address.
The most popular suffix for business is with .com, but .net is also widely used. Only truly non-profit organizations should register .org domains.
And finally, make sure it is something memorable. If your business name is long, use to most distinguishable part of it. We thought about this and created www.degreethree.com instead of www.degreethreedesign.com.
Can I transfer my current host/domain name server?
Certainly. The course of action for this is to first purchase the hosting from us, and then upload all of your files to our servers. After they have all been uploaded, we will transfer the domain name for you, so that the domain does not point to the new server before it is ready.
Domain transfers will take 2-3 days to resolve to the new host, this is completely normal. When you switch to Degree Three, we will transfer your domain with 000Domains.com, and add a year to your subscription for free.
What is Bandwidth?
Bandwidth is the traffic load that a server will handle over a given period of time. If a website exceeds its bandwidth limit, the server will close the access channel to the website. Although on average, a website will use around 500MB bandwidth per month, it is necessary to consider and plan for the fact that high-traffic sites may easily overflow this.
Will I be able to control my hosting options?
Absolutely. Our hosting packages come with an excellent online account manager, cPanel. It provides an easy way for you to edit your account details, view traffic statistics, install free scripts, and much more.
How do I get a customized hosting plan?
Custom plans are available to anyone who requests one. Just send in a service inquiry and we will quote you a fitting price.
DesignHow do you design my website?
Website design starts with a concept sketch. We find it very useful to have a pencil outline of the basic template when designing.
Next, we digitize the design in Paint Shop Pro. Most pages will be designed using mostly layered vectors, which can be easily enlarged or shrunken without losing any quality if you change your mind about a certain part of the design.
Once the graphics are done, we splice them and code them into the site. We prefer to hand-code, but may also use Dreamweaver. We take care to write the code in such a way that the content will be very simple to edit in the future.
Then we wait on you. It is your job to get the content to us. Once all the content is added it's time to start promoting your site!
How long will the website take to design?
A standard website design can take anywhere between two weeks and a month. Depending on the amount of scripting technology and the graphic intensity, it may take longer to produce the website.
The greatest variables in time required include how long it takes to receive the content from you, and how many times you ask me to revise the concept. In order to get your job completed as quickly as possible, please spend some time to decide exactly how you want the site to look.
Time required for individual graphics varies by request, but the average turnaround time does not exceed 2 days.
What do I need to provide?
The only thing you are required to supply us with is content for your website. You do not have to write the website text word for word, but we require at least a guideline to follow for each page.
If you have any images, fonts, or other objects which you would like to appear on the page, it would be helpful for us if you provided those files. If you have an FTP program, the best way to send us files is via FTP upload. If you do not have an FTP program, please email the files as attachments.

How should I choose the look of my website?
There are a multitude of things to take into consideration. Probably the most important is determining your target audience. What will the viewers of your website expect and want to return to?
For example, the website for a rock band will probably have a more flowy, interactive look that of a consulting firm. You will also want to consider the age of your target group. The aged will have a more difficult time reading with low-contrast colors, in other words, stick to black text on white.
It helps us if you send a link to a website which is similar to the effect that you want to achieve.
What if I need my current website redesigned?
We will gladly redesign your current website. Just send a service inquiry and we will quote a cost. Just as with a website from scratch, you will receive a free Bronze SearchSubmit package to help promote your new design.
Will my website work on all the browsers?
We currently test our websites in Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, Konquerer, and Opera. Our goal is to achieve cross-browser consistency. However, some effects simply cannot be reproduced between browsers. We will ensure that your website will look the same and that there are no errors which will inhibit viewing or interacting with your site.
DegreeThree.com has been tested on all these browsers, and functions nearly impeccably on all of them (after many revisions). Our menus and popup frames are movable in IE, but that effect cannot be reproduced in the other browsers. We have spent time fixing those other things, though, and now only a minor fault remains.
We will spend the time to fix any errors that we encounter to ensure that all of your visitors enjoy a quality visit.
How much does a website cost?
On average, a website costs between $400 and $700. Highly interactive websites, or those using a great deal of database scripting or e-commerce, may exceed $1000. On the other hand, small personal sites may start as low as $200. Remember, these are averages. Pricing is based on an individualized quote system. You may also select to pay at an hourly wage of $30/hour for any work directly involving your website.
MarketingWhy is marketing important?
Marketing is critical to establishing and maintaining a successful Internet presence. Without incoming visitors from affiliated websites and search engines, you are running the race backwards, paying for hosting and design, and receiving nothing in return.
How do you market my site?
If we created your website, it has been optimized for the search engines. We have taken special care to investigate which search terms will provide the most relevant traffic and have targeted your website's keywords and content to those terms.
Next, we use a software program called SubmitWolf to submit your website to thousands of search engines, directories, and free link pages. We may also manually add your link to individual websites such as DMOZ and Yahoo.
Depending upon the plan you choose, we may also find other successful websites whose link would be beneficial to your website. These sites include companies offering similar, or complimentary, but not competitive services.
How do you submit to thousands of search engines?
The list of search engines, directories, free-for-all's, and link pages to which we submit grows daily. We use a program called SubmitWolf Enterprise to send links to such pages. The list is maintained by Trellian, and is available upon request.
What are the benefits of manual submissions?
Manual and paid submissions guarantee rapid placement in the search engines and directories. They are by no means a substitute for search engine optimizing a website and seeking other means of marketing.
When will I start seeing results?
Marketing efforts generally start paying off on a large scale within a month. Some marketing strategies will bring traffic within only a few days, but overall, it takes time and work to draw steady traffic.
